Discord bot terms of service
The terms for Cryptic and my other Discord bots. Inviting one to your server means you accept these.
Which bots this covers
These terms cover Cryptic and every other Discord bot I run under the name rustybusgaming. Rather than a separate page per bot, one set of terms covers them all.
Where a specific bot does something these terms don't describe, the bot's own repository README is the more specific description and wins.
These terms do not cover this website, which has its own.
Accepting these terms
You accept these terms when you invite one of the bots to a Discord server, or when you use one of its commands in a server where it already is.
If you invite a bot to a server, you're confirming you have permission to do so — normally that means you're the owner or have Manage Server.
If you don't agree with these terms, remove the bot. That's the whole opt-out.
Who can use them
You must meet Discord's Terms of Service, including their minimum age — 13, or higher where your country sets a higher age of digital consent.
Nothing here overrides Discord's rules. If Discord's terms and mine conflict, Discord's win.
Acceptable use
Use the bots for what they're for. Specifically, don't:
- Use a bot to harass, dox, threaten, or abuse anyone.
- Use a bot to distribute malware, spam, scams, or illegal material.
- Deliberately spam commands, run automated loops against a bot, or otherwise try to overload the hosting.
- Attempt to exploit bugs, bypass permission checks, or gain access to data from servers you're not in.
- Resell access, or present a bot as your own product.
- Use the moderation, logging, or anti-nuke features to build covert surveillance of members who haven't been told the bot is there.
These are hobby projects running on hobby hosting. Treating them roughly ruins them for everyone else.
If you run a server
Server owners and moderators carry real responsibility here, because the features are powerful.
- You choose what's enabled. Logging, auto-moderation and anti-nuke are configured per server, by you. What gets recorded in your server is your decision.
- You're the data controller for your server. If your members are in a jurisdiction with data-protection law, telling them what the bot records is your job, not mine. The Privacy Policy lists exactly what's stored so you can point at it.
- Moderation decisions are yours. A bot carries out warnings, mutes and bans that you or your moderators configure. I'm not a party to disputes about them.
Availability and changes
There is no uptime guarantee. These bots run on modest hosting, maintained by one person, for free. They go down. They get restarted mid-command. Sometimes a deploy breaks something for an evening.
I may add, change, or remove features at any time, and I may shut a bot down entirely. If a bot is retired I'll try to give notice in the support server, but I can't promise it.
Ending access
You can end this at any time by removing the bot from your server.
I may block a user or a server from using the bots, without notice, if there's abuse, an attempt to break the hosting, or a breach of these terms. For clear-cut cases — automated abuse, illegal content — that block may be permanent.
No warranty
The bots are provided as-is and as-available, with no warranty of any kind. I don't promise they'll be available, correct, secure, or fit for anything in particular.
In particular, don't rely on a bot as your only safeguard. Anti-nuke and anti-raid features are best-effort heuristics, not a security product, and they can miss things or fire on the wrong person. Keep real backups of your server configuration and real humans in your moderation team.
Liability
To the maximum extent the law where you live allows, I'm not liable for any loss or damage arising from use of the bots — including lost data, lost messages, wrongly applied moderation actions, server disruption, or downtime.
Nothing here limits liability that legally can't be limited. Where your local consumer law gives you rights these terms can't override, those rights still apply.
These terms are governed by the laws of [YOUR COUNTRY / STATE].
Changes to these terms
I'll update this page when things change, and the date in the footer changes with it. Significant changes get announced in the support server.
Continuing to use a bot after a change means you accept the updated terms.
